Within a short drive of Abergavenny are numerous castles, the most notable being Raglan, Chepstow and White Castle. Each one is set in a beautiful location and ideal for picnics. Only ten minutes away is the Big Pit (right) at Blaenavon, a shaft coalmine dating back to the 1840s, and also an Ironworks dating back to the 1780s. There are extensive Roman remains at Caerleon, with a fine modern museum. Brecon has a new theatre and hosts an International Jazz festival each summer. A famous Literary festival is hosted annually in Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny hosts an annual food festival. The area is well situated near Cardiff and Chepstow and sports several gourmet restaurants. The town also hosts a growing arts festival each summer.
